While Matt has already given a pretty detailed synopsis of the trailer, there are a few mysteries in the trailer that I want to expound upon. Is the entire game about the assassination of Liquid Ocelot? It seems to make sense, as Liquid is the figure behind the PMCs and his death could mean the collapse of these proxy war corporations.

Also according to the trailer, this new strain of FoxDie allows the user to control the battlefield in real time, which is the reason why the various soldiers in Meryl’s troupe began fighting one another. However, there mysteriously appears to be at least one soldier unaffected. The soldier that runs to Meryl’s side, wearing shades, seems to be immune to the effects of FoxDie for some reason. Is it his shades? Is this soldier Raiden in disguise and immune because of his cyborg status? Or is it something else entirely? Maybe he’s slow to feel the effects, but that seems unlikely considering the level of distress everyone else is in.

Another thing I noticed is the woman in the helicopter behind Liquid appears to be Naomi. Has she sided with Liquid in this game? Since her voiceovers seem to indicate that she is still empathetic to Snake, perhaps she’s a double agent in this game as well.

The undeniable highlight of the trailer, however, was the fight between Vamp and Raiden at the close. Vamp appears to have the advantage for the majority of the fight, with moments that appear as if he’s actually toying with our favorite whiny prettyboy-turned-cyborg death-machine. Kojima also appears to have a foot fetish, with Raiden and Vamp pulling off some spectacular moves using their feet to fight and handle knives, a feet feat that has been shown off by Raiden in a previous trailer as well.

The Metal Gear Solid series is known for their cinematic quality trailers and this year didn’t disappoint in that respect. There are those that would have preferred a playable MGS4, but Kojima promised that in the coming months at the Tokyo Game Show, so we just have to hold our collective breaths until then.
