When You Sell Out, Don't Tell Everyone About It
Every developer struggles with the tradeoff between making a game "accessible" and making it rewarding for hardcore, experienced players. Sometimes, they sell out their faithful fans to attract a bigger audience. It's just something that happens in this industry, and in entertainment in general.
But they usually don't come right out and say it!
In a recent interview, EA's John Riccitiello said that the company is delaying Mass Effect 3 so it can mess with the "gameplay mechanics," so as to "address a far larger market opportunity."
You read that right. These adjustments aren't to "streamline the gameplay" or to "make the game friendlier to newcomers, so that they too can enjoy the experience." They're to "address a far larger market opportunity."
Geez, dude. You could at least pretend there's an element of art to all this game-design stuff.
Far Cry 3 Coming Soon?
Honestly, I didn't get the big deal with Far Cry 2. I played it for only a few hours before getting fed up with the enemy respawning, boring travel, etc. But lots of people loved it, and the next iteration of the franchise might be coming soon.
Several years after the game was first announced, it has appeared on the resumes of several game-industry professionals. The leading theory: It will be officially unveiled at E3.
