Guybrush and Elaine – The Secret of Monkey Island
What do you get when you match up a no-nonsense governor with the master of Insult Sword Fighting? Adventure gaming’s most popular power couple, of course. The hapless Guybrush is an unlikely suitor for the supremely competent Elaine Marley at first, but he proves himself via pure moxie and the ability to stick very odd items together in order to solve puzzles. What woman wouldn’t love a man who can create a zip-line from a rope and a rubber chicken? Don’t answer that.
You and Your Pokémon – Pokémon Series
Nobody gets between a Pokémon and its trainer, and this relationship is still going strong after sixteen years. There are few gamers who haven’t been deeply attached to these little digital critters at some point in their lives, whether they played as a kid or participate in the cutthroat world of grown-up Pokémon battles today. After all, the world would be a pretty groovy place if eight-year-olds could wander the world freely and without fear, taming intelligent monsters and pitting them against each other in gladiatorial combat. That sounds way cooler than second grade to me.
Balthier and Fran – Final Fantasy XII
This smooth-talking sky pirate and his bunny-lady partner share a partnership that is truly deep and unconditional. These two rightfully should have been the stars of Final Fantasy XII, as Balthier gets all the best lines while Fran has the coolest accent. Both are dedicated to doing the right thing for their world, even if it means living outside the law and being exiled from their home societies. This pair’s final scene caused many a stoic gamer to tear up, and left no doubt about the fact that the two are totally kickass and completely inseparable.
Marcus and Dom – Gears of War Series
Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago have one of the most famous bromances in gaming. These two brothers-in-arms show a strong dedication to each other throughout the series, made even stronger by the ability to play the pair cooperatively. Although the two are macho almost to the point of satire, there’s still something touchingly genuine about this friendship. With everything these two went through over the years, we can’t help but think that Anya will never truly be able to fill the Dom-shaped hole in Marcus’ heart.
Raynor and Kerrigan – StarCraft Series
These two StarCraft heroes have one of the rockiest relationships in the history of gaming. Kerrigan is a woman who has spent her life fighting to make her own choices while powerful groups seek to control her psychic powers. Raynor is the beefy space paladin who loves her. Despite Kerrigan becoming the Queen of Blades of the Zerg and ravaging the galaxy, Raynor never gives up on her and helps her to wrest free of the Zerg’s control. In the upcoming StarCraft II expansion pack, we learn that Kerrigan has gone back to the Zerg, this time on her own terms. Can these two survive in the face of Kerrigan’s seeming betrayal, or will they end up facing off against each other? These two kickass characters are a long way from Happily Ever After, and that’s exactly why they’re so interesting.
