Halo: Combat Evolved is known as the game that single-handedly saved the Xbox from going the route of the Dreamcast, and that claim, while impossible to test, isn't without validity. While the Xbox launched with an otherwise lackluster library, Halo: Combat Evolved was the game that led people to purchase Microsoft's new and shaky console. Halo introduced gamers to a control scheme that has yet to be improved, A.I that was light years beyond anything seen at the time, and a likeable and mysterious protagonist that would capture the hearts of Xbox gamers everywhere.

The original Halo can be considered the definitive system-seller, the killer app, the game that moved systems and supported the Xbox, ensuring that we'd have big titles today like Bioshock, Mass Effect, Blue Dragon, and of course Halo 3. The somehow enthralling story of Master Chief and his fight against the Covenant hordes has captivated gamers since the original, and hasn't let go in the years to follow.

By introducing staples to the FPS genre that are nearly standard today, such as using the trigger buttons to throw grenades, having realistic (if alien) enemies that reacted in believable and humorous ways, and an intuitive control scheme that has become the industry standard for nearly any game where you have a gun, Halo: Combat Evolved has stood the test of time and proven its importance in the grand scheme of gaming. Enhancing the incredible single-player campaign even further was the inclusion of multiplayer, which was, interestingly enough, not standard when Halo launched. While there was no Xbox Live then, people competed in split screen matches or using system link to put a bullet into their buddies, and the undeniable fun that ensued burned Halo into the hearts and minds of gamers indelibly.
