Version History (0200) | __ | |/ \_|================================================================|_/ \| Version 0.2 > December 14th, 2005 --------------------------------- I decided to make a FAQ for FireRed/LeafGreen this day. The first version of this guide. I made the Table of Contents, along with the ascii art and headers. Completed the first 3 sections along with the both of the Basics section, right before the walkthroughs. In addition to those things I completed the Move List, Abilities List, Move Tutors List, Type Advantage Chart, Items List, Berries List, TM/HM list, breeding guide and the last couple of sections at the end (FAQ and Guide Closing). Added a new section, Basic Battle Strategies. I think this FAQ is 50% complete and just need the walkthroughs. I went up to Vermilion City in the walkthrough. 270 KB. Version 0.4 > December 16th, 2005 --------------------------------- Made some progress on the walkthrough. Went up to Celadon city and completed it as well. 285 KB Version 0.6 > December 17th, 2005 --------------------------------- More walkthrough updates in this version. Made it all the way up to Cinnabar Island and completed the Side Quest section with info on how to catch the legendary's. More to come. 318 KB Version 0.8 > December 18th, 2005 --------------------------------- Probably my last incomplete version. Got pretty far in my walkthrough. All walkthrough complete up to Victory Road. It took me a long while to get up to there, don't know why... =/. Almost Done! 340 KB Version 1.0 > December 19th, 2005 --------------------------------- Huzzah! The first complete version of the whole guide. I completed everything I said in Version 0.2 plus the whole walkthrough. I completed the Victory Road and the Elite Four to wrap up this guide. I plan on makeing a lot more updates to this guide, so expect a lot. 360 KB Version 1.4 > December 20th, 2005 --------------------------------- Made a huge update today in completing this section. I completed the Islands walkthrough, section 7. I also completed the Unknown Dungeon section and made some additions to some section. I might make one more update later. 404 KB ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ _ _ |\__/ |================================================================| \__/| | __ | 03. FR/LG Pokémon Differences (0300) | __ | |/ \_|================================================================|_/ \| Like the originals, there are some slight differences between Fire and Leaf, primarily in their obtainable pokemon selection. Here's the breakdown of the version exclusives: -----------------------------------. .------------------------------------ LEAFGREEN \ / FIRERED -------------------------------------^-------------------------------------- Bellsprout- Weepinbell - Victreebel < Oddish - Gloom - Vileplume - Bellossom Magby - Magmar = Elekid - Electabuzz Slowpoke - Slowbro - Slowking > Psyduck - Golduck Sandshrew - Sandslash > Ekans - Arbok Vulpix - Ninetales = Growlithe - Arcanine Pinsir > Scyther - Scizor Staryu - Starmie = Shellder - Cloyster Azurill - Marill - Azumarill > Wooper - Quagsire Misdreavus > Murkrow Sneasel < Skarmory Remoraid - Octillery > Qwilfish Mantine > Delibird Leaf Green = Fire Red As a rule of thumb (but not an absolute) the pokémon on one side appear in the same places and same rate in their version as the pokemon directly opposite them. The major violation to this rule (and possibly the only one, I'm not sure) is Electabuzz/Magmar. _ _ |\__/ |================================================================| \__/| | __ | 04. Game Basics (0400) | __ | |/ \_|================================================================|_/ \| These are the basic things you know to pass and at least play the game. It includes every basic things from the controls to how to catch pokemon even. If you are a begginer at pokémon I suggest you read this section. It will help get started and how to do the basic things. If you are not, then you should skip this section. O============================================================================O | --- 4.01 Controls --- (0401) | O============================================================================O Directional Pad (D-Pad): ------------------------ The Directional Pad (or D-Pad for short) is your navigation button. That is to say the D-Pad allows you to move your character around various areas, whether it be a town, city, forest or cave, but it also allows you to navigate the various menus, both of the in-game and battle variety. Start Button: ------------- The Start Button's primary function is to call up the main menu anytime when you're not in battle. Select Button: -------------- The Select Button is rarely used. It has a few in-game functions, but it's most important in-game function is when you set an item to the Select Button. When you do that, press Select at any point out of battle to use said item. B Button: --------- The B Button is known as the "cancel" or "back" button. In the various in- game and battle menus, if you select something and you don't to commit to that selection, press B to go back to the previous menu. This only works if your selection didn't make something happen. That is to say, once you select an attack in battle, you can't press B and go back - it's too late. But if you select an item in a menu and don't want to use it, press B to go back. Also, outside of battle and menus, once you obtain the Running Shoes, you can run around with them through towns, forests, caves and essentially anything outside of battle (except houses and other buildings) by pressing and holding down the B Button. A Button: --------- The A Button is used to search and confirm. Press the A Button in front of someone to talk to that person, press the A Button to pick something up off of the ground or table, or in the in-game and battle menus, pressing the A Button will confirm a selection, whether it be an attack or whatever. The A Button is also used to progress text when talking to someone, or end a conversation when it's over. L Button: --------- The gameplay "help" feature will be activated. If you don't understand something during the game, such as the controls or a certain term press this button for help. R Button: --------- Same as the L button mostly. Also, this button will change the text characters during a chat with a link cabe or wireless adapter. O============================================================================O | --- 4.02 Battle Screen --- (0402) | O============================================================================O /--------------------------------------------------------------\ | ___________________ | | | Pokemon Name Lv.# | | | | HP:=----------- | <-----------. | | |___________________| \-> Opponets Pokemon | | | | | | | | ___________________ | | Your Pokemon <-. | Pokemon Name Lv.# | | | \---------------> | HP:=----------- | | | |___________________| | | | | | | | l=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-l | What should | Fight Bag | | do? | Pokemon Run | \=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-/ This is a screen that appears when you first enter any battle. The battle screen contains your pokemon's status, HP, name, Exp. and level. This also applys to the opponets pokemon's box. (Execpt for Exp.) So you should know what each things mean, so you could start battling. So, you've entered into a Pokémon battle? Now what, you ask? Well, let us first focus on the battle menu. There are four choices within the battle menu, and they are... Fight: Fight is the primary command you'll select when using your Pokémon in battle. When you select the Fight command from the battle menu, it'll bring you to a list of the attacks the particular Pokémon you have in battle can use. As you might know by now, your Pokémon can have up to four attacks at one time, so selecting the Fight command will bring you to these attacks, however many your Pokémon may have at that given time. Bag: Selecting the Bag command will bring you to your Bag where you hold your various items, whether they be healing items, status-curing items, or the like. You can find more information on the Bag in the Basics section of the guide, and, of course, more information on the various in-game items can be found in the Items section of this guide. Pokémon: Selecting the Pokémon command will bring you to a list of your current party Pokémon, which is essentially the Pokémon you currently have in battle on the left side of the screen, and your five idle Pokémon on the right side of the screen. Here, you can swap in and out various Pokémon (into and out of battle), view their summaries, stats, et cetera, and decide what course of action to take with what Pokémon in this battle. Do note that when you swap in a Pokémon in battle, that is essentially your turn in the battle, meaning you won't get to attack for that turn. This assumption is void if one of your Pokémon is slain in battle, in which case you get to freely replace him with another Pokémon from your party. Run: Selecting the Run command will allow you and your party of Pokémon to flee from battle. The weaker the enemy is compared to your party, and the slower the Pokémon is, the better your chances of escaping from battle. Remember, selecting Run isn't foolproof, and it's actually quite a bad idea to run from battle, as you don't get the experience points for your Pokémon necessary to make them grow in strength so that you can fight stronger Pokémon, fight stronger Gym Leaders, and get more Badges. You cannot select run during trainer battles. O============================================================================O | --- 4.03 Catching Pokémon --- (0403) | O============================================================================O One of the main things in the game, next to badges, is catching pokemon. Without catching pokemon there won't be such thing as a pokedex. So that's why I put this in the FAQ. The art of capturing Pokémon is a no-nonsense craft that you will need to master if you ever hope to capture Pokémon. Different Pokémon have different resistances to being captured, as some are incredibly easy to capture, while others are next to impossible to capture. However, there are certain things that you should keep in mind. 1.) Weaken the Target Pokémon - Trying to capture a full-health Pokémon and make him your own is next-to-impossible, and it shouldn't be attempted. Why? Because you'll miss, and you'll waste a Pokéball in the process. What you'll want to do is weaken your Pokémon as much as you can. You can weaken him to 50% to make him vulnerable to capture, but lowering him to as low as 10%-15% is the best thing to do. Usually, when you encounter a Pokémon you want to capture, you'll want to switch out the Pokémon you currently have and put in your weakest party-ready Pokémon. This is so you don't kill the Pokémon before you capture it. Chip away at the Pokémon's health slowly, but surely. When the Pokémon gets to around 25% health, you can start throwing Pokéballs at it. If you miss, try again. If you miss again, weaken the Pokémon more, and when he's literally next to death, try again. You should capture it. If not, you might have encountered a strong-resistance Pokémon, or a rare Pokémon that'll need a stronger type of Pokéball to capture. And on that note... 2.) Use the Right Pokéball - The standard Pokéball will capture a vast majority of the Pokémon, as long as you've weakened them enough and tired them out. For some Pokémon, however, a stronger ball will be needed, such as a Great Ball or Premier Ball, amongst others. Don't waste these stronger Pokéballs, however. Try your regular Pokéballs several times, try weakening the enemy more, and try capturing it again before you waste a more powerful ball. 3.) Be Patient - If you kill a Pokémon when you're attempting to capture it, don't fret; it happens. With rare exceptions, you'll get the chance to capture that Pokémon again. Just simply run around the area where you originally ran into it, and chances are you'll run into it again. As a last resort, check out the entry for that Pokémon in your Pokédex to find more locations on where you can find that Pokémon, as well as more vital stats and information that might be of assistance in capturing that Pokémon. Exhaust all options before simply giving up on capturing a particular Pokémon! 4.) Once Captured, Don't Neglect! - Some Pokémon might not look like much. Some might not even have any attacks. But use that Pokémon in battle (switching it out after the battle starts if you have to, to get it half of the battle's experience) and build it up. Eventually, these weak Pokémon evolve into Pokémon that are so incredibly strong that it'll amaze you. That's why they're weak to begin with - they are meant to turn the player off from them so that they miss a Pokémon with incredible strength. Don't make that mistake, try to use all of your Pokémon fairly evenly and experience what each one brings to the table. _ _ |\__/ |================================================================| \__/| | __ | 05. Pokemon Basics (0500) | __ | |/ \_|================================================================|_/ \| So this is the section where the pokemon things you need to know are. You should take alook if your a beginner and all the pokemon basics are in here. O============================================================================O | --- 5.01 Status Conditions --- (0501) | O============================================================================O Special and status-altering attacks can cause a variety of conditions. Items must be found or purchased to combat these conditions. Here is a quick breakdown of what they do: Burn: Lose HP during battle for the duration of the Burn status. Also reduces Attack. Confuse: Confused Pokémon have a 50% chance of causing damage to themselves by accident. Automatically cured after battle. Fainted: When your HP are 0, the Pokémon faints and can no longer attack. However, special HM techniques like Cut still work outside of battle. Flinch: If a Pokémon flinches after getting hit, it can't attack for that round. Freeze: Frozen Pokémon can't attack until they're unfrozen (through Fire techniques or items). Paralyze: Paralyzed Pokémon experience a radical drop in Speed while the effect lasts. Their attacks will also fail half of the time. Poison: Poisoned Pokémon lose HP every turn in battle. This condition will not end after battle and the Pokémon will continue to lose HP with every four steps you take. Sleep: A sleeping Pokémon cannot attack. It will wake up on its own after a few turns. O============================================================================O | --- 5.02 Pokemon Natures --- (0502) | O============================================================================O Something that should be added in this section because it really is into pokemon. Kanto Walkthrough (0600) | __ | |/ \_|================================================================|_/ \| Be aware this was written for Fire Red, and there may be some minor changes from Fire Red to Leaf Green. As you begin by selecting new game, all the controls in the game will be presented to you. Concluding that, Prof. Oak will begin giving his long, boring, unnecesary speech. You will be then given the option to name both your rival and yourself. (I called myself Harison since my real name won't fit) After all this you will finally begin your journey and you will be in your house in pallet town. O============================================================================O | --- 6.01 Pallet Town --- (0601) | O============================================================================O As you start you quest, you will be in your room. Go to your PC at the top right of your room and take the out the potion out. Just Log on and click your PC. Select "Withdraw Item" and click on Potion to take it out. Log out and head out your room. When your down stairs and exit your house to wind up in Pallet Town. Go north to a little opening in the trees and walk in the grass area to start a cutscene with professor Oak. He'll begin talking about you needing a pokemon for protection. He will then lead you to his lab and when you head in you'll see your rival standing there complaining. Prof. Oak will then give you a choice of choosing your starter. Who will you choose as your starter? Bulbasaur - the grass type, Squirtle - the water type, or Charmander - the fire type. This decision will make a huge difference in your gameplay. Choose with precaution. I will make a breif rundown of all 3 starters to help you choose. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bulbasaur ~ Level 5 =-------= Evolutions: Ivysaur (Level 16) > Venasaur (Level 34) Bulbasaur is the Dual Type of the 3 starters. He is grass/poison type. He should be used by beginning players. He has strengths against the first, second, and eigth gyms, and he is resistance against the third, fourth, and six gym, and only has weakness to the fifth and seventh gym. Easy, like I said. Squirtle ~ Level 5 =------= Evolutions: Wartortle (Level 16) > Blastoise (Level 36) Squirtle is the water type of the trio. He should be used by intermidiant players. He has advantages against the first, seventh, and eigth gyms, but has weaknesses to all but the fifth gym. Whoa. Still, he can get you to the point where you can catch some decent pokemon for the gyms, like pokemon that are the type weak against the gym type. Charmander ~ Level 5 =--------= Evolutions: Charmeleon (Level 16) > Charizard (Level 36) He is the Fire type starter of the game, duh. He is a difficult Pokemon to use. Seeing as he is hard to use in the first Gym, it will be hard to progress early in the game. He only has strengths against the forth gym, and has weakness to the First, Second, and Eigth gyms. He should be used by advanced or expierenced players. Your choice. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I chose Charmander for no real reason, I just like using him. After you choose your starter, your rival will choose the pokemon type stronger than yours. So if you chose Charmander, he chose Squirtle, if you chose squirtle, he chose bulbasaur and if you chose bulbasaur, he chose Chamander. Try to exit the Lab and you will be stopped by your rival and be forced to battle your first battle. ____________________________________ / RIVAL BATTLE NO. 1 \_________________,---------------------. | Boss: Rival ( Winning Money: 175 | |------------------------------------.-----------------`---------------------| | His Pokemon: Bulbasaur Lv. 5 | My Pokemon: Charmander Lv. 5 | | Charmander Lv. 5 | | | Squirtle Lv. 5 | | >-----------------------------------'--------------------------------------< | | | Pretty easy. You can get a potion on this route. Just talk to the guy standing around, he is the only one so you'll find him. As you probably noticed you can't catch pokemon yet since you don't have any pokeballs. I would strongly suggest to battle the wild pokemon here for EXP and train up to level 8 at least. It will be very helpful for the future and you'll be greatful you did. If your wondering about those jagged rocks on the side of the route, they can be jump downedwhen your coming from Viridian City back to Pallet Town. No, you can't jump over them when you are going to Viridian city, only the other way. Continue on. --|-|--------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- | | - Viridian City - | | --|-|--------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- First things first, head into the Pokemon Center. It has a Red Roof, so that's how you know. Just head in and talk to the nurse behind the counter. She will not only heal your pokemon HP but also it's PP and any status condition for free! Yes for free! If you take the elavator stairs up, you'll wind up in the Cable Club floor. This place is trading, chating, battling, mixing records and more. You have to use a link cabe or Wireless Adapter to do all these things. For more info, the lady there will speak to you about this floor. If you go back down, on the top right corner you will see a PC like in your room. In the PC you can store and withdraw pokemon, store and withdraw items, and contact Prof. Oak for him to rate your pokedex and alot more. After you heal, exit the pokemon center and head to the pokemart in the north. It is the blue roof top to be excact. Head in and the clerk will speak to you and tell you to deliver a Parcel to Oak from the pokemart. I guess we have to. Recieve the parcel and exit the mart. Go back to Pallet town through route 1. For a faster route, jump down from the rock ledges and you'll avoid all that grass. --|-|--------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- | | - Pallet Town - | | --|-|--------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- .----------------------. | Items in Pallet Town |_________________ '----------------------| Pokedex | | World Map | '-----------------' Alright, just a couple of things to do here. We have to deliver the Parcel to oak so go to his lab. Speak with him and give him the parcel. Your rival will come and Prof. Oak will give you both a Pokedex each. That's all so head out. On your way out, Oak's aid will give you 5 free pokeballs. Free. Exit. On your way to route 1, head into your's rival's house. Talk to his sister Daisy there and she'll give you a World map to view well, the world. Exit and go to Viridian City through Route 1 up, through the grass. =( O============================================================================O | --- 6.02 Viridian City --- (0602) | O============================================================================O .----------------------------. There we could | Burn Heal..............250 | get the first badge of the game. '----------------------------' First things first, we need to stock up on Items. The first thing you should get is another 5 pokeballs. I would suggest buying to 2 Antidotes and 1 Paralyze Heal. You won't get burned by any pokemon for a while, so no Burn Heals. Get that out of the way and exit the mart. On the top of the city is a Gym, sadly it's closed and it will saty like that until the near the end of the game. There is a potion behind the tree next to the guy that was blocking your way to route 2. Go west of the pokemon center and then up at a opening at the top. Head threw the narow path and get the potion. So now you can catch pokemon, so why don't you? I would recommend catching a pidgey if you didn't get a charmander. You could catch a rattata if you want but he wont last on your team. If caught a pokemon, train to around level 8 or so. If you didn't catch a pokemon yet, there is more on Route 22. It is west of Virirdian city. Go over there for more pokemon and something else... --|-|--------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- | | - Route 22 - | | --|-|--------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- .--------------,----------,------------.-------------------. | Pokemon Name | FireRed | LeafGreen | Items on Route 22 |_________________ >-------------+----------+-----------<`-------------------| None | | Rattata | Common | Common | '-----------------' | Mankey | Uncommon | Uncommon | | Spearow | Rare | Rare | '--------------'----------'------------' Now you can catch a mankey, a good fighting type or a spearow another Flying type that learns different moves. If you really want a figthing type on your team then get mankey. I really didn't catch any pokemon that will be on my final team, but I caught some to help me later... Head through the grass patch, and then west. Your bad ol' rival will appear. He'll talk about the league and how he can't get in. After talking you'll end up battling him. ____________________________________ / RIVAL BATTLE NO. 2 \_________________,---------------------. | Boss: Rival ( Winning Money: 280 | |------------------------------------.-----------------`---------------------| | His Pokemon: Pidgey Lv. 9 | My Pokemon: Charmander Lv. 9 | | Starter Lv. 9 | Mankey Lv. 8 | >-----------------------------------'--------------------------------------< | | | Your rival is harder than last time. considering the level change. He now | | has a Pidgey in the same level his starter is. He will start off with | | Pidgey, and will use mostly sand attack a couple of times then attack | | which will get annoying. Defeat it with any pokemon, perhaps your starter. | | Upon defeating him, he will send out his starter. What really sucks now is | | that his starter now knows his special attack move to defeat your starter. | | I would suggest using the other pokemon that you caught, since he won't be | | weak against it. Use the free potion you got from the guy in Route 1 or | | the one you found in Viridian City. If you lose this time, you will lose | | half of your money so come prepared. | | | '----------------------------------------------------------------------------' This rival battle can be fought a numerous amount of times, so feel free to do so for EXP and money. Head back to Viridian City and heal. I would save after your done healing, in case something comes up. Now head up north to Route 2. --|-|--------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- | | - Route 2 - | | --|-|--------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- .--------------,----------,------------.-------------------. | Pokemon Name | FireRed | LeafGreen | Items on Route 2 |_________________ >-------------+----------+-----------<`-------------------| None | | Pidgey | Common | Common | '-----------------' | Rattata | Common | Common | | Weedle | Rare | Rare | | Caterpie | Rare | Rare | '--------------'----------'------------' Nothing new or of interest in Route 2. There is some more Weedles and Caterpies in this route too but they are very hard to find. They much easier to find in Viridian Forets up ahead, so catch one there if you want. You will also see some Pokeball shaped items on the road, like the potion you got at Viridian City. You can't them yet because they are in a area unaccesable at the moment, so ignore them for now. You'll get them later so continue north. Once you reach a gatehouse, head in and talk to the people for little info. Keep heading up and go through the door. --|-|--------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- | | - Viridian Forest - | | --|-|--------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- .--------------,----------,------------.-----------------------. | Pokemon Name | FireRed | LeafGreen | Items: Virdian Forest |______________ >-------------+----------+-----------<`-----------------------| Pokeball | | Weedle | Common | Uncommon | | Potion | | Caterpie | Uncommon | Common | | Antidote | | Metapod | Rare | Uncommon | '--------------' | Kakuna | Uncommon | Rare | | Pikachu | Rare | Rare | '--------------'----------'------------' In this area, catch the caterpillars and Pikachu if you're lucky enough to find one. If you have Charmander or Squirtle, catching Pikachu is a must. Kakuna and Metapod are perfect training posts for weak Pokemon. They usually come in Level 5 and can't attack. Since they are an evolved form, you can bring up some serious exp. Train your new Weedle/Caterpie here too, but not both. I told you the caterpie and weedle are easier to catch here. This forest is very puzzle liked, meaning this is your first one of the game. Lucky for you that this is very puzzling or hard at all, you could pretty much guide yourself threw it. If you just want a turn-for-turn path walkthrough of the whole thing, here it is: (this will not include the trainers) From the beginning, go right, up, right, up, left, up, left, down, left, up, left, down, left, and up. Following this path you will find 3 trainers in total. The first two will close to each other and can be avoided. I would really encourage you to fight all the trainers in the game for EXP. obviously and completion. Meaning if you want to "Pass the game", you would have to beat all the trainers in the game. They are simple really and only have pokemon levels 6 to 7 and are easily defeated by any pokemon. Battle them. Now. the last trainer cannot be avoided by any means. He is harder than the last two trainer, but nothing you can't handle. He has a level 9 Weedle, which poisons your pokemon. This is one of the reasons I told you to buy some Antidotes. If you didn't buy not one antidote, you can still get one here in the forest. To get it go from the 2nd Trainer, go Left and up. There is also some other items you might consider picking up. To get the pokeball, from the beginning, go left, up and left again. From the 3rd trainer, go down, right, and down to get the potion here. That's all the items available here. Now before you leave, you should have a temporary 5 pokemon team or a team that is good at this point. To show you a good team to have at this point, I will post up teams I think are good for each starter, just to give you an idea. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bulbasaur Lineup: =---------------= Level 10 Butterfree Level 08 Pidgey Level 08 Pikachu Level 10 Nidoran (M/F) Level 12 Bulbasaur Squirtle Lineup: =--------------= Level 08 Pikachu Level 10 Butterfree Level 10 Nidoran (M/F) Level 08 Pidgey Level 12 Squirtle Charmander Lineup: =----------------= Level 12 Mankey Level 10 Butterfree Level 10 Nidoran (M) Level 08 Pikachu Level 14 Charmander ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ These are lineup examples of how your team should look like depending on your starter. These are my teams I had with each starter. Anyways exit Viridian City into another gatehouse. Head outside of that and you'll be in Route 2 again. Same pokemon and same route. Tired much? If you are or not go north up to Pewter City. O============================================================================O | --- 6.03 Pewter City --- (0603) | O============================================================================O .----------------------------. There are some new items on sale now. An escape | Pewter City Pokemart | rope allows you to instantly warp outside of a >--------------------------< cave, dungeon, etc. I would suggest you pick up | Pokeball...............200 | one. That's about it, exit the Pokemart. '----------------------------' Another thing you definately do every time you head into a new town will be healing your pokemon at the pokemon center. Heal your pokemon, you'll see a reporter standing around the PC. Just answer it if you want, It won't really matter at all. If you head west of the pokemart, you'll see a dude there and if you try to keep going he'll stop you ask you a question. If you answer yes he'll leave you alone and if you answer no, he will take you to the pewter city gym. There is a museum on the top of the city but it's a waste of money really, there just a bunch of junk about space and astronomy. It will get interesting later... so just wait. Exit if you entered that place and head to the Pewter city Gym in the Middle-left of town. Save before you head in. _ _ -| |----------------------------------------------------------------------| |- | | - PEWTER CITY GYM - | | -|_|----------------------------------------------------------------------|_|- Once you enter the gym, you'll see the man standing there. Talk to him for some advice. Not real advive really, he just says what type the gym uses and there weaknesses. Keep heading north and you'll see a gym trainer with a Level 10 Geodude and level 11 Sandshrew. You could skip around or battle him for EXP. it won't matter. After reaching the top of the gym, you'll see Brock, the Pewter City Gym leader! ____________________________________ / PEWTER CITY GYM Reward: TM 39 \________________,----------------------. | Gym Leader: Brock ( Winning Money: 1386 | |------------------------------------.----------------`----------------------| | His Pokemon: Geodude Lv. 12 | My Pokemon: Charmander Lv. 14 | | Onix Lv. 14 | Mankey Lv. 13 | | | Nidoran (M) Lv. 13 | >-----------------------------------'--------------------------------------< | | | Being your first gym leader, Brock can be pretty challenging. However, it | | is really not your level or stats that determine whether or not you win | | this battle, but mainly the type of pokemon you chose in the beginning. | | Bulbasaur and Sqirtle people have it easy. Just use your main elemental | | attack (Vine Whip, Bubble, etc.) For the Charmander trainers, this is | | definitely not your place. | | All of your attacks right now suck against rock types, (with the exception | | of metal claw, if you have it), so you will definitely have to rely on some| | other pokemon to do your fighting for you. There are three ways to approach| | this. One is to get another pokemon. If you read other guides, most will | | tell you to use a Butterfree and its confusion attack. This works, but | | isn't the best way. I personally recommend a Mankey, which is a fighting | | type. Train it up to at least level 12-14 and take on Brock. That's why one| | is on my team. If you're too lazy to, or just don't want to invest time in | | a pokemon you don't even like, you can try to use your starter. If you | | decide to do this, you must have a Charmeleon (level 16), and you must use | | metal claw. If you evolve your Charmander you will have a much better | | chance. The only con to this method is the fact that Onix has a godly | | defense (in this stage). Metal claw used by a level 16 Charmeleon will do | | about 1/4 to 1/3 damage to Onix's total HP. | | | | You only need to watch out for Rock Tomb, which lowers speed and is super- | | effective. Brock will use a potion if needed, and you should too. Don't feel | bad if you got killed a couple of times before finally beating him; he's | | pretty hard for a first gym. (Unless you're using Squirtle of Bulbasaur. | | If you lose with them, you're a moron.) You will recive 1386 money for | | winning. | | | '----------------------------------------------------------------------------' After listening to the cool gym leader music, head out. Heal and prepare to ascend Mount Moon. Make sure you're equipped with items (especially Pokeballs) as there won't be a shop for a while. --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- | | - Route 3 - | | --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- .--------------,----------,------------.-----------------------. | Pokemon Name | FireRed | LeafGreen | Items on Routes 3 & 4 |______________ >-------------+----------+-----------<`-----------------------| None | | Pidgey | Common | Common | '--------------' | Spearow | Common | Common | | Mankey | Uncommon | Uncommon | | Nidoran (M) | Unnommon | None | | Nidoran (F) | None | Uncommon | | Jigglypuff | Rare | Rare | '--------------'----------'------------' There's some new Pokemon here. For those of you who didn't catch Spearow before, now's your chance. Another Pokemon of interest are the Nidoran and Jigglypuff. Be sure to at least land a Nidoran Female for breeding, but if you're playing Fire Red and can't stand to search so long, grab a male one since IMO, that one's better anyway. Jigglypuff aren't that great but you need it for your Pokedex. This is the only place to find it so grab it before moving along. This is a horrible place to train Grass and Bug Pogleys so move your butt out of there if you plan to train Bulbasaur(Ivysaur?) and your bugs. Some'll come at low levels, so be careful not to faint them. Here you might begin to find pokemon with Berries attached as items. If you take a berry off of a pokemon, you will also get the Berry Pouch Key Item, which works in a similar fashion to th TM Case you got from Brock. Route 3 leads directly to Mt. Moon. At the entrance to the route, you'll run into Prof. Oak's Aide, who will give you the invaluable Running Shoes. Now you'll be able to move a lot faster by pressing the B Button. In order to pass to Mt. Moon, you need to do battle with a number of Pokémon trainers. If you don't want to fight, it's pretty easy to avoid them by staying out of their line of sight. But remember that you need to build up experience and level up your Pokémon. Avoiding battles can be a really bad idea. Keep going till' you reach a new route. --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- | | - Route 4 - | | --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- Follow Route 3 to Route 4 and head north to find the Poké Center. It's a good idea to heal your Pokémon here and save your game as you're about to enter Mt. Moon. You can also buy a Magikarp from a travelling salesman for 500. Do you have a lot of cash? Well, if you do, then go for it. Magikarp is a really common Pokémon and you'll get the chance to catch tons of them later -- but if you grab one now and stick it at the top of your party, you'll soon be able to evolve it into the powerful Gyarados. And yes, you do want one. Once you grab it, head back outside and go into the nearby cave opening. It's... --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- | | - Mt. Zubat doesn't stand a chance against Electric attacks (you're probably glad you caught that Pikachu in Viridian Forest, right?), where as the occasional Geodude or Sandshrew is best taken out by a Water attack. Here are the ways to get the items if you don't want to look at the cave walkthrough below. Potion 1: From the TM, go up and then left. Potion 2: From the beginning (And until you reach a opening as described), go Up, right, Up, right, down, and left until you find a item ball. Moon Stone: From the ladder to the second area, go up and left, in the upper left corner. Escape Rope: From the Rare Candy, go up. Rare Candy: From the second potion, go right and up. And HP-Up: From the first trainer, go right, up and right until you find a ladder to a small cavern. Same as TM 01. That's all the items. If your not sure still how to get one, look at the cave walkthrough below. Head north, then wrap around and find the TM09 next to the rock formation. It contains Bullet Seed. Grab it and move north to battle a trainer. When the fight concludes, grab the Paralyz Heal nearby. Return to the east and battle the girl next to the sign. Head north, then turn right and pass the ladder. Stick to the wall and go southwest to face off with another trainer. Grab the Potion in the corner and continue on east. You will find a Rare Candy in the corner. Don't use it yet. Keep it for much, much later. Fight the Bug Catcher to the left. When the battle is over, go east and then north to get the Escape Rope. Go west, then north and turn left to go back to the ladder you passed up initially. It's time to go down. Now follow the narrow tunnel and go up the next ladder at the end. You'll bump into a Team Rocket member. Team Rocket Grunt ----------------- Sandshrew, Lv. 11 Rattata, Lv. 11 Zubat, Lv. 11 After you defeat him, pick up the Star Piece on the small rock plateau and head back to the first floor. Head north from the ladder and wrap around the rock to the left battle Lass. When the battle with Miriam concludes, go southwest. Yep, it's another ladder. Go down to find yet another one and take that one down as well. You battle the second Team Rocket member here. Team Rocket Grunt ----------------- Zubat, Lv. 11 Ekans, Lv. 11 This room is of course another dead end, but don't leave before you've grabbed TM46 (Thief) from the rock plateau. Notice that small rock over to the right? Examine it to find an Ether, then go back to the first floor. Before you go down the ladder in the northwest corner of Mt. Moon, you have to defeat two more trainers. After you beat them, grab the Moon Stone in the northwest corner, then go down the ladder, following yet another linear tunnel to basement level 2. Make a right and go down the stairs to meet the third Team Rocket member. Team Rocket Grunt ----------------- Rattata, Lv. 13 Sandshrew, Lv. 13 After a quick battle, prepare yourself for a long walk around the rock platform that skirts the central area. As you reach the top, you'll run into another Grunt. Team Rocket Grunt ----------------- Rattata, Lv. 13 Zubat, Lv. 13 Keep heading north from the grunt and head towards the fossils. The choice is yours, but here's what the fossils will turn into later in the game: Dome Fossil: Kabuto (#140) -- which evolves into Kabutops (#141) Helix Fossil: Omanyte (#138) -- evolves into Omastar (#139) Both are Rock/Water types. Kabuto has higher Attack and Speed ratings, whereas Omastar has better Defense and Special. It's up to you which one you take, but Kabutops looks a whole lot cooler... Note that you can only get one of the two. You can only get the other one by trading with a friend. Move up and to the left to find a staircase leading to the ladder that goes out. '----------------------------' The Bike Shop is in the southwestern part of Cerulean City. You can go check it out - but unfortunately, you can't get your bike yet. The owner of the shop is asking for a million smackers. Not too shabby... Since you can't really get that much money (999,999 is the maximum amount you can get), you need to return later on to get your hands on your very OWN bike. The house next to the Pokémon Center is home to a Pokémon trader. It's a pretty good deal, too -- so don't miss out on the trade. Simply bring a Poliwhirl to the trader and get the rare Jynx in return. I would think you would have a Poliwhirl at this time or game, but if you do have one, trade! You can't enter the house in the northeast until later in the game. Team Rocket has robbed it and a cop is now guarding the door. Once you have met up with Bill (Route 24/25), you can come back here, go inside and battle a Team Rocket member. Your prize is TM 28 - Dig, a cool move that not only causes high damage and shields you from attacks during the first round, but also lets you escape from dungeons. You can also access Route 9 from here. Here's another area you won't be able to access until later in the game. Much later, to be exact. Go to the northwest corner of Cerulean City. See the guy standing in front of the cave entrance to the left? He is guarding the entrance to the Unknown Dungeon. Inside, you get the chance to capture the single most powerful Pokémon in the game. But we'll talk about that later. After taking a quick tour of the city, head in the pokemon center and heal of course. Feel free to use the PC if you have to. Exit outside and if your pokemon are at levels 20 to 21, then go face the gym leader. If your pokemon area at levels 16 to 19, then head north through a opening in the City. --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- | | - The Nugget Bridge (Route 24) - | | --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- .-----------------------------. | Items on the Nugget Bridge |_______________ '-----------------------------| Nugget | | TM 24 Attract | '---------------' To get the Nugget, Beat all six of the nugget bride's gang to get the nugget from the last guy. Route 24 is a great place to level up your Pokémon. As indicated in the previous section, it may be someplace you'll want to come before you take on the Cerulean City Gym--it all depends how much time you've spent leveling up to this point. Remember, you can always go back to a Pokémon Center to heal your Pokemon. If you beat the first five trainers on Nugget Bridge, you'll win a special prize. I'll list the trainers to help you. Well, only that Bill doesn't quite seem to be himself. Have you seen the movie "The Fly"? Same thing here. Bill accidentally combined his DNA with a Pokémon's. You can help him out by using his PC. Once you have restored everything back to normal, he will give you the S. S. Ticket that gives you access to the cruise ship in Vermilion City. Before you go back to Cerulean City, leave Bill's house once and go back in to check out some rare Pokémon on Bill's computer. Now head back to Cerulean City and heal your Pokemon. Your team levels should average to levels 18 to 21. If they are, your ready and if your not then train some more in the grass. Your Done! | | | '----------------------------------------------------------------------------' Now go back to Cerulean City and go into the Burglarized House in the northeast corner of town. Go through and you will fight a Team Rocket member. Team Rocket Grunt ----------------- Machop, Lv. 17 Drowzee, Lv. 17 Your prize for defeating this guy is TM28 (Dig), a cool move that not only causes high damage and shields you from attacks during the first round, but also lets you escape from dungeons. Once you grab it head south (the path to Route 9 is blocked by a tree) until you reach Route 5. --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- | | - Route 5 - | | --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- Route 5 leads to Saffron City, but it's also the location of the Pokémon Day Care Center. Same pokemon as Route 24. You won't be able to go to Saffron City by using the passage house in the south just yet - the guard says he's really thirsty and won't let you pass. Later on, after you have given another thirsty guard something to drink, you will be able to pass here at will. Day Care Center --------------- Here, you can drop off Pokémon you don't want in your party, but that you would like to level up nonetheless. For example, you can leave undesirable Pokémon you want to evolve just to complete your Pokédex, or you could drop off your Magikarp and later on come back to collect a Gyarados. Alas, it's not free. You will be charged 100 for every level your Pokémon gained, but that's a small price to pay for what you get out of it. The building to the right is the portal to an underground path to Route 6. At the entrance, a woman offers to trade a Nidoran Male for a female. Yawn. You can return later for the trade, or forget about it altogether. The underground path is littered with items that travelers accidentally dropped. If you walk by pressing the A button rapidly (think Decathlon), you may just get lucky and pick up some cool stuff. Head in the Underground path and go all the way to the end, exit through the stairs and out the door to Route 6. --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- | | - Route 6 - | | --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- The underground path leads all the way from Route 5 underneath Saffron City to Route 6. There is another guard house to the north, but you'll encounter the same problem the first time you get here: the guard's too thirsty and won't let you pass (hmmmm, that sounds like a legitimate reason, doesn't it?). So for now, head south into Vermilion City. The trainers on this route can easily be avoided. If you don't feel like fighting, just stay out of their line of sight. However, you can't pass the last two without doing battle. *NOTE: If you have Surf, try swimming around the pond in the south of Route 6. This pond is populated by Psyduck, as well as the occasional Golduck. Remember though, a Golduck evolved from a high-level Psyduck tends to be much more powerful than one you caught in the wild Head south to reach Vermillion City (and the third badge)! O============================================================================O | --- 6.05 Vermilion City --- (0605) | O============================================================================O .----------------------------. Welcome to the port town of Vermilion City. | Vermilion City Pokemart | Here, you will find the luxury liner S. Now | Repel..................350 | stock up some Pokeballs and Potions and exit. '----------------------------' Go to the house in the northwest of this town. Inside, you will meet up with an old man obsessed with fishing. Although his talk may bore you, you will receive an Old Rod which you can use to fish for Pokémon. Sadly, it doesn't catch much - but if you don't own a Magikarp yet, you can easily get your hands on one now. Next is the Pokémon Fan Club in the west, just above the Vermilion City Gym. Inside, you will encounter yet another longwinded old man, the president of the fan club. But this time, you'll get a much cooler present. Listen to the president's boring story and you will receive a Bike Voucher . You can redeem it for a bicycle in Cerulean's bike shop, so be sure to keep it in your inventory for later. Enter the building north of the gym to encounter another trader. Here, you can trade a boring Spearow against the more rare Farfetch'd. Not bad, huh? That's all you can do here. Now move on to Route 11, which is located to the east of Vermilion City. Before heading on to the gym, you first have to board the S. S. Anne luxury liner. You can reach it by going south. Note that you need the S. S. Anne Ticket from Bill (Route 25) to enter the ship. --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- | | - S.S Anne - | | --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- This luxury liner is packed with Pokémon trainers from all over the world. It's also the place where you will finally get HM01 (Cut). Your best way through the ship is to start by heading to the right. There are many items hidden in this ship and plenty of opportunities to level up your Pokémon and get cash by fighting trainers, so don't make the mistake to rush right through to the Captain. Because once you're there, the ship will leave and never come back. Entrance Deck ------------- When you first get in the boat, head down and go into the first cabin (the rightmost door of many) and fight the Gentleman you find within. Lower Deck ---------- Now take the stairs down to the lower deck. First off, though, go in the rightmost cabin and secure the Super Potion. In the next cabin to the left, you'll have your first trainer battle on this deck. Head to the next cabin to the left. Inside, you will find another trainer and an Ether. In cabin 4, you fight another Sailor and get TM44 (Rest), a great technique that restores all your health and cures status changes as well (the side effect: it puts you to sleep). In the fifth cabin, you fight the last two trainers on this deck. That's it for the lower deck. Now go up and head into the other direction. Entrance Level -------------- There are six cabins on this level. You've already been in the one to the very right, so make your way through the other five next. The second one from the right allows you the opportunity to rest. This functions like a Pokémon Center, so stop in there and heal your guys. Then head to the next room, which contains an angry old man. The next two rooms are pointless. Head past them to the third door you come to (the second from the left). Inside, there are a couple of young whippersnappers looking for a beating. In addition, there is a TM31 (Broick Break) in the corner. The last room in this row has nothing good inside. Don't go up the stairs on the left side of the boat just yet. Continue on down and take the exit into the Kitchen. Inside, you can find a Great Ball in the lower left corner. Search the trash to find Pecha Berry, Cheri Berry and Chesto Berry. Now go back out and take the stairs up to the second level. Before checking all the cabins here, take the next flight of stairs up to the third level. Deck ---- After a straight walkway, you will arrive on the outside deck. Here, you get to fight two more Pokémon Trainers. Take in the fresh air and head back inside. Second Level ------------ Don't waste your time with the first cabin, but do go into the second one. Inside, you will fight two trainers and find a Stardust. Skip the next cabin and head right into cabin # 4, where you get your hands on an X Attack and fight the two trainers. Congratulations! You just beat all the trainers in the whole ship. Your prize is a ton of EXP and the feeling of knowing you beat all the trainers. 8p Now to do what we came here for, (you don't know what we came for yet) from the entrance of the ship (DON'T GO OUT) go to the left, and continue until you find a staircase to the upper level. Continue down the hall and keep on going on the path until you run into your rival, and start the battle! __________________________________________ / RIVAL BATTLE NO. 4 Reward: Nothing \___________,---------------------. | Boss: Rival ( Winning Money: 720 | |------------------------------------.-----------------`---------------------| | His Pokemon: Pidgeotto Lv. 19 | My Pokemon: Pikachu Lv. 21 | | Raticate Lv. 16 | Kadabra Lv. 20 | | Kadabra Lv. 18 | Nidorino Lv. 22 | | Starter Lv. 20 | Charmeleon Lv. 23 | >-----------------------------------'--------------------------------------< | | | This battle is really similar to the battle before this, the only change | | is that he evolved all his pokemon except for Pidgeotto. Rub the captain's back and he'll teach you HM01 (Cut), the one you've been waiting for! Head back to Vermilion City. Say bye-bye to the boat! The Vermilion City Gym: You can only enter this gym once you have gotten HM01 from the S. S. Anne. If you've got it, you need to teach this skill to one of your Pokémon, then walk up to the small tree next to the gym. If one of the Pokémon in your party has Cut, it will ask you if you'd like to cut the tree. Do it and voila, the passage is now open. _ _ -| |----------------------------------------------------------------------| |- | | - VERMILION CITY GYM - | | -|_|----------------------------------------------------------------------|_|- Go through and enter the gym to fight Lt. Surge and his crew. To open the door that leads to Lt. Surge, you need to hit two hidden switches located in the buckets in this room. The switch locations are random, so all you can do is search all the buckets until you find the first switch, then look for the second one right next to it. If you mess up, you need to start over. The trainers in this gym all use Electric types, so be sure to bring your best Ground or Ground/Rock types along. Think Diglett, Geodude, Sandshrew or their evolutions. The easiest way to take out all the -mites, -orbs or -chus in this stage is to use your Dig technique over and over. Once you have fiqured out and unlock both switches, head to the top of the gym where the lasers were and talk to Mr. G.I Joe. (Lt. That's basically it on how to | | beat him. | | | | Unfortunately, there are also many things you have to watch out for. One is| | Voltorb's speed. You also get rewarded with 2367 winning money. | | | '----------------------------------------------------------------------------' Okay, were finally done with Vermilion city and the third badge. Now we have to concentrate on our fourth badge and continuing our quest. There are a few items you should get and places to go to train and stuff. Head west from the pokemart to Route 11. --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- | | - Route 11 - | | --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- .--------------,----------,------------.--------------------. | Pokemon Name | FireRed | LeafGreen | Items on Routes 11 |______________ >-------------+----------+-----------<`--------------------| Awakening | | Spearow | Common | Common | | X Defend | | Drowzee | Uncommon | Uncommon | | Great Ball | | Ekans | Common | None | | Escape Rope | | Sandshrew | None | Common | '--------------' '--------------'----------'------------' Not much here. If you haven't caught an Abra and evolved it, get a Drowzee or wait a bit longer for Mr. Mime. Either way, you need a Psychic on your team. They make great training posts and aren't quite that bad. The rest shouldn't interest you though so move on to the trainers. Route 11 connects Vermilion City with Lavender Town. Unfortunately, a sleeping Snorlax is blocking your way to the very East, so you eventually need to take a little detour and enter the cave at the entrance to Route 11. Still, there is some cool stuff here that you shouldn't pass up -- including your chance to get a Drowzee. Don't just run off and enter Diglett's Cave just yet. There are a whopping 10 trainers hanging around Route 11, some with more than 1,000 bucks in their pockets. So grab some of the Pokémon you want to level up and taken them out one by one. For starters, grab the Awakening near the beginning of the path. Then start working on taking down the trainers. Make sure you search the patch of grass near Braxton to get an X Defend. There is also a Great Ball, just past Gamer Dirk. Check the rock to the northeast of the house to get an Escape Rope as well. Get the Item Finder ------------------- Even if you can't pass the sleeping Snorlax outside the guard house yet, be sure to enter this building in the east of Route 11. Upstairs, Professor Oak's aide is waiting for you with the Item Finder. You will only get it if you have already caught at least 30 different Pokémon. Get Nidorina ------------ If you happen to have a Nidorino, you can trade it against a Nidorina. It's not really such a hot deal, though. Once you have the Pokémon Flute, you can wake up (and catch) Snorlax and go to Route 12 -- but we'll get to that later... For now, backtrack to Diglett's Cave to the west and enter it. --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- | | - Diglett's Cave - | | --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- .--------------,----------,------------.-----------------------. | Pokemon Name | FireRed | LeafGreen | Items: Diglett's Cave |______________ >-------------+----------+-----------<`-----------------------| None | | Diglett | Common | Common | '--------------' | Dugtrio | Rare | Rare | '--------------'----------'------------' This cave, dug by a bunch of eager Digletts, directly connects Route 11 and Route 2. There is no way that you can get lost down here and there aren't any trainers, so we can't really give you can specific tips. However, you can get your hands on two valuable Ground type Pokémon -- Diglett and Dugtrio. When battling these two, remember that Water, Grass and Ice are great attack choices, but that only Flying Pokémon can successfully avoid their devastating Dig attack. So when your opponent digs, switch to a bird. You will emerge north of Viridian City when you exit the cave. Since you now have the ability to cut down trees, here are a couple of little side quests you can fulfill before you move on to Route 9 and 10. Route 2 =============================================================================== Get Mr. Mime ------------ Back on Route 2, you can now enter the building just to the south of the cave entrance. Here, you can trade an Abra for the rare Psychic oddball, Mr. Mime. Get HM 05 - Flash ----------------- Before you move on, be sure to stop by the building further to the south. Since you now have Cut, you can chop away that annoying tree that blocks the way and enter the building through the backdoor. Note that you need more than 10 different types of Pokémon, otherwise Professor Oak's aide won't give it to you. HM05 (Flash) is a handy technique that lowers your opponent's accuracy in battle, but its best use lies outside battles. Activate Flash in dark caves to find your way. Head further south to find an Ether in the path, and lower... a Paralyze Heal. - Viridian City - ============================================================================== Get TM 42 - Dream Eater ----------------------- Go back to Viridian City, which is located to the south of this area. There are two small bushes in this city that can be cut down with the help of HM 01 - Cut. Once you cut down the bush in the southwest, you'll get your hands on TM 42 - Dream Eater. - Pewter City - ============================================================================== Back to the Museum ------------------ If you want, you can now continue on north from Viridian City (take Route 2 and go through Viridian Forest) to go back to Pewter City. Cut down the bush next to the museum and enter through the back door. Inside, you will receive the Old Amber, which you can use to clone a new Pokémon much later in the game (don't bother carrying it around for now). Talk to the first guy on the right to teach one of your Pokémon Seismic Toss. Give it to your most developed Pokémon to pack the biggest punch. - Cerulean City - ============================================================================== Get the Bike ------------ Even if you don't want to get any of the above items yet, do go back to Cerulean City (go through Mt. Moon again to get there) and enter the bike shop. Now that you have the bike voucher, you will finally be able to get a bike, which allows you to travel through caves and open places much, much faster. It's a good idea to move your bike to the top of your item list (use the Select Button to move things around) so that you can quickly access it without searching around. Now that you're in Cerulean, go through the Burglarized House and leave Cerulean City through its East exit to get to Route 9. --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- | | - Route 09 - | | --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- You can access Route 9 directly from Cerulean City, but you need to use Cut to get through. There's nothing really special here, except from a ton of grumpy trainers just waiting to get their butts kicked. You can avoid them if you don't want to fight, but since there's even a Pokémon Center in this area, why not use the opportunity to level up some of your weaker Pokémon? If you're looking for items, don't forget to grab TM40 (Aerial Ace) near the entrance (it's right in front of the second trainer), as well as a Super Potion hidden under a "Cut-able" bush right next to the cave entrance at the end of this area. There is also a Burn Heal next to Hiker Alan. After you defeat (or avoid) all the trainers, pay a visit to the Pokémon Center to get ready for the Rock Tunnel. Enter the area through the entrance next to the center. The Aide here will give you an Everstone if you have captured more than 20, so be sure to chat him up. When you go outside, one more trainer remains. Once you beat her, head into the Rock Tunnel. Later: Go to the Power Plant: You can see the power plant from the south of this area, but you can't get there until you learn Surf. --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- | | - Rock Tunnel - | | --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- Have you taught Flash to one of your Pokémon? If you have, select that Pokémon from your list and use the technique to light up the dark -- otherwise you won't make it through here very well. Don't bother searching for items or exploring these tunnels all that much. This area is basically only a connector between Route 9 and 10 -- but there are plenty of trainers to fight on the way. From the ladder, move east to grab a Repel . Move back west and take on the first trainer near the rock wall. Curl around the wall and head east. Follow the path as it bends north and take the ladder down. Go south, then west to find the next trainer. Head further west, then north into an opening to find another trainer. Continue to the north to find another battle. Go north, then follow the path east, then go north. You'll find the next trainer at the south end of a rock wall. Go north around the rock wall to find another hiker. Continue northwest to find a ladder back to the first floor. Fight the nearby trainer. From here, head west, then south to find another hiker to battle. When you finish, head east and pick up the Escape Rope, then go north to another battle. Once you polish off Lucas, head down the ladder nearby. Go north to find a Max Ether. Then head south, and west at the crossroads to face a picknicker. From here, move northwest to find the next trainer. Go northwest again to find another Head up the ladder beyond Cooper. In the next tunnel, you'll run into a trainer. Follow the path, wrap around and continue to the next picknicker. In the cave north of Dana is a Pearl. Grab it, then continue past her to the west. Then bend south and exit to Route 10. --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- | | - Route 10 - | | --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- This route is tiny! As you exit the Rock Tunnel from the north, you will immediately see yet another trainer. Actually, there are two more to the left and one right next to the passage to Lavender Town. You don't have to fight if you don't want to, but you might as well take the challenge if your Pokémon are still healthy. Exit to the south to go to Lavender Town. He will only let you change names of Pokémon you captured yourself. Once a Pokemon is traded, the name sticks -- so be sure to give the Pokémon you're planning to trade with a friend some especially ridiculous names. There isn't much you can do when you first walk into this house. You'll be told that Mr. Fuji is missing, but that's about it. Don't enter Pokémon Tower just yet. You don't have the necessary tools to engage wild Ghost Pokémon yet, so you can't finish the job. Return here as soon as you've found the Silph Scope -- and start training a Psychic Pokémon to be ready for the enemy. The Silph Scope can be found in Celadon City, which can be reached via Routes 8 and 7. Just go into the small cottage in the northwest and you will discover an underground passage that leads to Route 7, which in turn connects to Celadon City. But before you can get there, you need to fight a bunch of trainers that block your way. Enter the underground passage as soon as you're done here. You'll emerge on Route 7. Continue through route 7 westward until you reach Celadon City. O============================================================================O | --- 6.07 Celadon City --- (0607) | O============================================================================O Welcome to the biggest city in Pokémon Land. Not only is there tons of stuff to discover and battles to be won, but Celadon City actually features a Pokémon Super-Store as well. Here, you can pretty much buy anything you can imagine. Well, okay. Maybe not everything. But it's still the best place to shop in the whole game. Have you ever dreamed of meeting the people that programmed Pokémon? Here's your chance -- at least kind of... Inside Celadon Mansion, the large building in the north, you can talk to virtual members of the Game Freak team. You'll be told to return once you get all 150 Pokémon. What will you get? A certificate, of course. But there's a much better secret slumbering in this mansion. Sneak into the building through the back door (while you're in the backyard, head all the way to the west to grab an Ether ) and you will get your hands on one of the coolest Pokémon in the game: Eevee. Go up the various staircases until you reach a lone man in a room with a Pokéball. Grab the Ball to get the Evee. With the help of three mysterious stones, you can evolve Eevee into another, even more powerful Pokémon: • Thunder Stone: Evolve into Jolteon • Fire Stone: Evolve into Flareon • Water Stone: Evolve into Vaporeon The vote for best evolution goes to the insanely fast Jolteon but all three are great additions to your team. Sadly, you can only find one single Eevee in this game. If you've got a lot of cash to burn, this is definitely the place to be. The sheer amount of stuff you can buy in this giga-sized Pokémon Mart... And it's not just the usual power-ups. Here are a few things you should definitely do while in the store: • Don't forget to talk to the clerk on the 3rd floor. He will give you TM18 (Counter) -- for free! • Buy a Thunder Stone on the 4th floor (or, if you're not into turning your Eevee into a Jolteon), get a Water Stone or Fire Stone. • Buy a Poké Doll. You will need it in Saffron City. • Go to the roof level and buy one of each beverage--Fresh Water, Soda and Lemonade. Give them to the thirsty little girl to receive TM16 (Light Screen), TM20 (Safeguard) and TM33 (Reflect). • Buy an extra drink (Water is fine) for the guards that block your passage into many of the towns. Note that one drink does the job for ALL guards. • Stock up on Lemonade. It heals 80 HP and costs only 350. It's definitely the most economic healing potion in the game. • If you've got cash to burn, buy some performance enhancers, like Protein, Iron, Carbos or Calcium. .----------------------------.----------------------------. | Celadon City Dept Store F2 | Celadon Dept. This way, you can rack up quite a lot of tokens -- and you'll need them if you want to get your hands on some of the great prizes available in the Exchange Corner: Pokemon Exchange ~ =--------------= • Abra............180 • Clefairy........500 • Dratini........2800 • Scyther........5500 • Pinsir.........2500 • Porygon........9999 TM Exchange ~ =---------= • TM13...........4000 • TM23...........3500 • TM24...........4000 • TM30...........4500 • TM35...........4000 This is the only place you can get a Porygon, by the way. So start saving. Now head back to the Pokemon Centre and heal. Stock up on Items and save before you enter the gym. Now, time to head to the Celadon City Gym! _ _ -| |-----------------------------------------------------------------------| |- | | - CELADON CITY GYM - | | -|_|-----------------------------------------------------------------------|_|- This city's gym is ready for your challenge at any time. Led by Grass Pokémon enthusiast Erika, you should be able to breeze through this gym in no time if you've got some good Flying, Fire or Psychic Pokémon in your party. Approach the first two trainers. The first one is a Lass with a Level 23 Bellsprout and Weepinbell, the evolution of Bellsprout. The second is a Beauty with 2 Level 21 Oddishes and Bellsprouts. Now in the left branch is another Beauty with 2 Level 24 Bellsprouts. The right branch has a Picnicker with a Level 24 Bulbasaur and Ivysaur. Cut the bush at the front entrance to fight a Female Cooltrainer holding a Level 22 Oddish, Bellsprout, Weepinbell, Gloom, and Ivysaur. She also has a Hyper Potion. To the left there is a Beauty holding a Level 24 Exeggcute. The Lass on the right has 2 Level 23 Oddishes and a Gloom. Now, time for Erika! __________________________________________ / CELADON CITY GYM Reward: TM 19 \___________,---------------------. | Gym Leader: Erika ( Winning Money: 2871 | |------------------------------------.-----------------`---------------------| | Her Pokemon: Victreebel Lv. 29 | My Pokemon: Jolteon Lv. 27 | | Tangela Lv. 24 | Kadabra Lv. 28 | | Vileplume Lv. 29 | Nidorino Lv. 27 | | | Charmeleon Lv. 29 | >-----------------------------------'--------------------------------------< | | | I'd like to bring to your attention the fact that you've probably been | | afflicted with some sort of status condition while battling your way to | | Erika. Almost all the pokemon in this gym are half poison, and most of them| | know poisonpowder, acid, stun spore, or sleep powder. I would recommend a | | lot of awakenings, paralyz heal, and antidotes. This is the first gym that | | Charmander trainers have an absolute advantage in, and once again, those | | with Squirtles are gonna struggle in without the recommended types. If you | | don't have a fire/ ice/or flying type, a psychic will work fine, because of| | the many half-poison types. A Kadabra works well, but due to the high | | special attack of Vilplume and Victreebel and the not so high special | | defense of Kadabra, Drowzee/Hypno will be better. | | | | The only pokemon you have to worry about in Erika's team are the Victreebel| | and Vileplume. Tangela will use mostly grass attacks, while Victreebell and| | Vileplume will try to inflict status conditions on you. All 3 will use | | Giga Drain A LOT. Try to sweep them all out in the first round with | | the recommended types and don't hesistate to heal status conditions if | | needed. | | | | Once you beat Erika, you get your hands on the Rainbow Badge as well as | | TM19 (Giga Drain). Trainers who own the Rainbow Badge can command Pokémon | | up to level 50. You have the fourth badge. Now it's time to kick some Team | | Rocket butt! | | | '----------------------------------------------------------------------------' Once you beat him, go to the poster he was in front of and press "A" to open the path to the Rocket's Hideout. --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- | | - Rocket's Hideout - | | --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- To access Team Rocket's secret hideout, examine the poster in the Game Corner. To do that, you'll first have to beat down one of their grunts: Team Rocket Grunt ----------------- Raticate, Lv. 20 Zubat, Lv. 20 Once he goes down, search the poster. You will find a secret switch and a way in. The place actually looks more complicated than it really is. The only thing that may throw you off are the conveyor belt tiles that automatically move you. Just experiment with different paths and you should be able to find plenty of items and get through the whole stage. You need a key to get to the boss, so do that first. To get it, follow the stairs down to the northwestern corner of the fourth basement level. Beat the trainer there to get the Lift Key. With the key in hand, return to the top floor and take the elevator down to B4. Items ----- There are a ton of items in this stage, including the mysterious Silph Scope you need for the Pokémon Tower. Apart from the Lift Key, here's what you can find: • Escape Rope • X Speed • Blackglasses • Max Ether • TM12 (Taunt) • Moon Stone • Super Potion • Hyper Potion • TM21 (Frustration) • Rare Candy • TM49 (Scratch) • Calcium • Silph Scope There, you will have to fight two rocket members to continue. Once you do that, you will have to fight Giovanni for the Sliph Scope. ____________________________________________ / GIOVANNI BATTLE NO. 1 Reward: Silph Scope \_________,---------------------. | Boss: Giovanni ( Winning Money: 2871 | |------------------------------------.-----------------`---------------------| | His Pokemon: Onix Lv. 25 | My Pokemon: Jolteon Lv. 28 | | Rhyhorn Lv. 24 | Kadabra Lv. 29 | | Kangaskhan Lv. 29 | Nidorino Lv. 29 | | | Charmeleon Lv. 30 | >-----------------------------------'--------------------------------------< | | | Rather simple, really. He has two Rock/Ground types and can be taken out | | with a Water/Grass/Ice attack for 4x the damage and a Fighting or Ground | | type for 2x the damage. His Kangkaskhan (the normal type) can be taken out | | with a fighting move. he has very strong attacks and actually level. It | | uses strong moves like Mega punch or Mega kick. Take him out quickly before| | he uses these moves constantly. You recieve 2871 money for winning! | | | '----------------------------------------------------------------------------' Once you defeat the Boss, you will have the Silph Scope, so head east to Lavender Town and enter the Pokémon Tower. You can now take Route 7 and go through Saffron City to get there more quickly. Simply hand one of the Tea you got in Celadon City to the annoying guard blocking your way. Voila! Now all guard houses are open. Head back to Lavender Town (after healing) and head in the Pokemon Tower. --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- | | - Pokémon Tower - | | --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- Time for some ghost-busting. If you've found the Silph Scope in Celadon City, you can now safely enter the Pokemon Tower in Lavender Town. The Silph Scope will turn the unknown specters you would otherwise encounter into, well... more tangible specters. Turns out those hostile apparitions are just Haunters and Gastlies. Since this is your first encounter with ghosts, here's an important tip: don't use Normal or Fighting type attacks. They won't work. Instead, use whatever Psychic attacks you've got. All Ghosts are also dual Poison types, so Ground, Psychic and Bug attacks work especially well. Since you've got Dig, be sure to teach it to one of the Pokémon in your group. It's devastating against the Ghost enemies. Getting through the tower is easy. You can really wreck shop if you have a built-up Fearow or similar flying Pokemon, who also has a Dark attack (like Pursuit). The Pokémon Tower is really linear and there aren't really any tricks to getting through. Just fighting all the trainers and continue on up. You might as well use a Repel on yourself after you've caught Gastly and Haunter, although you might get lucky and encounter a Cubone once in a while. Keep heading up the Tower and you'll encounter your Rival in the second floor. Yawn. __________________________________________ / RIVAL BATTLE NO. 5 Reward: Nothing \___________,---------------------. | Boss: Rival ( Winning Money: 2871 | |------------------------------------.-----------------`---------------------| | His Team #1: Pidgeotto Lv. 25 | My Pokemon: Jolteon Lv. 29 | | Kadabra Lv. 20 | Kadabra Lv. 30 | | Gyrados Lv. 23 | Nidorino Lv. 30 | | Exeggcute Lv. 22 | Charmeleon Lv. 31 | | Charmeleon Lv. 25 | | >-----------------------------------'--------------------------------------< | His Team #2: Pidgeotto Lv. 25 | My Pokemon: Jolteon Lv. 29 | | Kadabra Lv. 20 | Kadabra Lv. 30 | | Growlithe Lv. 23 | Nidorino Lv. 30 | | Exeggcute Lv. 22 | Charmeleon Lv. 31 | | Charmeleon Lv. 25 | | >-----------------------------------'--------------------------------------< | His Team #3: Pidgeotto Lv. 25 | My Pokemon: Jolteon Lv. 29 | | Kadabra Lv. 20 | Kadabra Lv. 30 | | Gyrados Lv. 22 | Nidorino Lv. 30 | | Growlithe Lv. 23 | Charmeleon Lv. 31 | | Ivysaur Lv. 25 | | >-----------------------------------'--------------------------------------< | | | This is where you see some real difference in your rival. He still has | | Pidgeotto which is as annoying as usual with Sand Attack, but is now armed | | with a new attack, Whirlwind. He'll use this rarely but it can be dangerous| | since it switches your Pokemon. | | | | Now, if your rival started with a Charmander or Bulbasaur, he will have a | | Gyarados. This thing is about as hard as spelling its name. It will constan| | use Thrash which will have a lot of power and can KO a lot, but will confus| | itself after 3 turns which is your chance to strike. Electric atacks should| | do the trick. BTW, if you ever want this Pokemon, evolve your Magikarp if u| | haven't already ;o | | | | If you rival started with a Charmander or Squirtle, he will have an | | Exeggcute. It's a bit of a joke really. It will usually use Awakening first| | followed by a Reflect to increase defense. It can easily be KO'd within a | | few turns as long as you have an Awawkening. It's a new face but easy to | | defeat. | | | | If your rival started with a Bulbasaur or Squirtle, he will have a | | Growlithe. Another easy dude, you've faced many on the SS Anne and this one| | is no different. Use Ground, Rock, or Water attacks. | | | | Kadabra is also the same as always. High Special Attack and low defense, so| | a couple of Quick Attacks should make quick work of it. It will use Kinesis| | a lot which is just like Pidgeotto's Sand Attack so finish it fast and keep| | switching. | | | | Now for the starter. All three of them will just use their normal elemental| | attack along with a new damaging attack. They're all pretty simple and wil | | fall fast to something that they are weak against. | | | '----------------------------------------------------------------------------' When you finish with Gary, head up to the third floor and battle the trainer. Near Hope, you'll find an Escape Rope. Grab it and head to the next floor. Also on this floor, you'll find an Elixir, an Awakening and a Great Ball. When you have all the goods, cruise up to the next floor. At the center of this room is a healing area, so visit that. In the healing area, you'll find a Cleanse Tag, and there is a Nugget in the lower left corner. Before heading up, be sure to grab these goodies. On the next level, you'll run into: You will find an X Accuracy and Rare Candy on this level. The stairs to the top floor are guarded by a ghost -- which turns out to be the spirit of a Level 30 Marowak. At the top of the tower are several Team Rocket Grunts. They play as follows: Team Rocket Grunt ----------------- Zubat, Lv. 25 Zubat, Lv. 25 Golbat, Lv. 25 Team Rocket Grunt ----------------- Koffing, Lv. 26 Drowzee, Lv. 26 Team Rocket Grunt ----------------- Zubat, Lv. 23 Zubat, Lv. 23 Rattata, Lv. 23 Raticate, Lv. 23 After you have beaten all the trainers, you will find the missing Mr. Fuji. As a thank you for rescuing him, he will give you an awesome prize: the Poké Flute. Not only can you use it to wake up the two sleeping Snorlax that block your way, you can even use it in battle to wake up any sleeping Pokémon. If you want, you can now head to Route 11 or Route 12 and wake up and capture the Snorlax. Remember though, there are only two Snorlax in the game. Be sure to catch at least one of them, as it's a powerful Normal type. Next stop: Saffron City. Go west from Lavender Town to get there. O============================================================================O | --- 6.08 - Saffron City --- (0608) | O============================================================================O .----------------------------. '----------------------------' Saffron City has been taken over completely by Team Rocket. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to enter the once benevolent Silph Company HQ and free it from said Rocket infestation. Before you move on, you may want to pop into the local Gym. Which one? Yep, you're right. There are two. At first, you can only enter into the one on the left. Fighting Dojo Gym ----------------- This gym is actually not required to beat the game. But you get a cool Pokémon prize when you beat it, so don't skip it. The opponents are really easy to beat. Just use a Ghost type (it can't be hit by the Fighting Pokémon) After you have beaten the Karate Master, you will be given the choice of one of two rare Fighting Pokémon: Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee. You can only get one of the two, so choose wisely. Since Hitmonchan's Special rating sucks, it's probably a good idea to pick the lightning fast Hitmonlee. How do you get the second one? Sorry, you can only obtain the other through trade or by beating Pokémon Stadium's Gym Leader Battle mode. Get TM 29 - Psychic ------------------- Enter the house in the southeast to get TM29 (Psychic), one of the most reliable attacks in the game. Use it often against Poison (/Ghost) and Fighting types for one-hit wins. --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- | | - Silph Co. - | | --|-|---------------------------------------------------------------------|-|-- This office maze can be really confusing when you don't know where you're going.
