And it goes beyond the gameplay, straight on to the game's method of motion capture. LucasArts is working with Industrial Light and Magic, animating the characters with simultaneous body, face and voice capture, which is exactly how Uncharted manages to achieve such incredibly natural and nuanced performances in its cutscenes, as well as fluidity in its animation. The game is still in pre-production, yet already the sequences shown demonstrated a level of polish that is often missing from retail code. That isn't to say it was perfect, as some of the animations didn't entirely link up, and the protagonist's design was clearly a placeholder.

The big problem is, with LucasArts unwilling to reveal anything with real meat, we're in the dark as to when it's coming out and what sort of experience it really aims to provide. Is it a free-form, open world action game? A linear adventure romp? LucasArts is talking up the combat options (of which they've revealed none), but has already demonstrated a tremendous penchant for scripted, cinematic sequences. Further, the game is being billed as "dark and gritty," but other than some light swearing, and a clearly sociopathic bounty hunter as the player's mentor, the demo didn't include anything that jumped out as especially violent and, yes, they're using lasers, but that precludes blood, not dismemberment.
It's far too early to start championing such doubts, though, and what was shown is the most promising thing seen out of a Star Wars property since The Forced Unleashed first hit us with the idea of a Star Wars game that took its material to a violent (forceful?) extreme. Though that ended up being a lot of bluster without a ton of impact, Star Wars 1313 has, for now, the benefit of the doubt.
