There are few things I enjoy more than trivia and quiz shows, so it should come as no surprise that I love Buzz! Master Quiz. Although the original PS2 version was a virtual gameshow on a console, the PSP version of Buzz is a little different in terms of presentation and gameplay structure.

It still provides a great trivia challenge, but this time it's more personal. It's doesn't have the same kind of party atmosphere that the PS2 multiplayer modes displayed. There are no bells, whistles, or, for that matter, buzzers in the PSP version. It's a straightforward trivia game that gets right down to the business of making you look like an idiot.
The questions are well rounded; presented in a variety of categories such as entertainment, science, sports, history, and other bits of mental gymnastics that hint at an IQ test. The majority of trivia questions are presented as multiple-choice, ala Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Supposedly there are more than 5,000 questions, but since they are randomized, I started to run into repeats after a few hours. And that's about how long it takes to play the entire game. That doesn't mean you'll have covered every question by then, it simply means you have completed the quiz challenge that involves unlocking all sequential categories of questions. That may sound a tad more confusing than it really is. Suffice it to say, you unlock different styles of questions as you progress. It flows and feels natural when you actually play it. I really liked the variety of questions, although many of them seem to favor middle-aged people that have had more life experience. In your face, punk!
Along with the standard trivia questions, there are some interesting puzzles to solve such as putting phrases and titles in the proper order, identifying an image from seeing only a small section of it, and identifying various audio and video clips. Unfortunately, you won't find these more complex audio/video puzzle questions in all the multiplayer modes. This PSP version of Buzz is rather disappointing in the multiplayer department, especially when compared to the console version. If you're not familiar with the PS2 version, you won't know what you're missing, so don't worry. You can still challenge up to five friends without having individual copies of the game for each player. These modes may lack in the options and production value department, but they are still fun and challenging. I'll explain exactly what you can expect with the multiplayer modes later.

As with any trivia game, a correct answer will get you points. In Buzz, the faster you deliver a correct answer, the more points you will get. In each Quiz, you can attain a series of medals and trophies. The medals include bronze, silver, and gold. These awards are based on a variety of factors such as how many questions you got right in succession, and how many questions you were able to answer within a time limit. These awards are meant to give you a quick visual reference of your progress, as well as to taunt you into having another go at it. There's something about having a bronze metal that just feels second-rate. You are definitely going to want to try for the gold, but that can be pretty frustrating, unless, of course, you manage to get a few repeat questions to help you out. Please, don't use a cheat code....
