Visually, Shadow of Mordor delivers an unparalleled LotR experience on current-gen consoles. Character models are fluid and detailed, while the environments are sprawling and littered with minutia. The world lives and breathes as Orcs scout and patrol, wildlife scurries, and the weather changes punctuate an excellently crafted visual experience. Cutscenes are beautiful and deliver story with the utmost of production quality.
This eye candy is only made better by the epic soundscape. Trademark LotR score and a cast of talented voice actors help to bring to life the soundscape that could only be present in the world of Lord of the Rings. In short, it sounds great.
But is this anything more than a cheap Assassin’s Creed clone, cashing in on the Lord of the Rings name? At first, I would have said no. In the beginning Shadow of Mordor absolutely screams Assassin’s Creed, but shortly thereafter becomes something else entirely. Through the Nemesis System, a dichotomous protagonist, and a heaping helping of Orc guts to remove, Shadow of Mordor definitely has enough meat on the bone for any action adventure gamer. What starts out as something familiar, ends up completely foreign and unique, something most games dare not accomplish.
So, is Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor worth buying? Absolutely. It will appease hardcore fans of games like Assassin’s Creed and the Batman: Arkham series, while introducing new gameplay mechanics that fundamentally change the structure of the game. A unique experience for any gamer indeed.
