E3 2016: Prey Preview

E3 2016: Prey Preview

Bethesda works in mysterious ways. Sometimes it gives us exactly what we’d expect – things like DOOM , Quake , or Fallout – but sometimes it decides to pick up something we never thought we’d see again. Such is the case with Prey , which showed up during Bethesda’s E3 conference with one of the best trailers we saw during the expo – hands down. While this is something we’ve been hoping for, we’re left wondering what to expect. By calling the game Prey , you invoke expectations from fans of the original who might wish for continuity from the game they know and love from Human Head Studios. However, I’m pleased to let you know that this is something different; something altogether new.

In the trailer we wake up, again and again, as Morgan Yu. For now we don’t know anything about Morgan other than his name and his residence, which I’ll get to in a moment. Morgan, whether by his own power or under the influence of some alien power, seems to be acclimated to a daily schedule of meetings and research. He wakes up like many of us might wake up: to a stout cup of coffee and a digital assistant droning on about his itinerary, which is consistent and unchanging – or so it seems.

Morgan lives on board the space station “Talos 1.” So far his reason for being there remains somewhat ambiguous, except we know that he’s taking part in some kind of experiment designed to alter the human race. In the last Prey, our protagonist was a Native American living on a reservation in Oklahoma who was forcefully abducted by an alien race. That’s how he got on his spaceship, but how Morgan came to work, sleep, and live on the Talos 1 is still a mystery.

We see that his schedule does deviate from time to time from monotonous meetings to sometimes slaying evil aliens, so Morgan has that in common with the original hero. Morning after morning, before leaving for “work,” Morgan looks into the mirror and inspects his eye. With each passing day we notice that his eye becomes more shot through with redness and veins until it almost matches the deep red of his uniform. We’re told that Prey will introduce a surprising psychological twist, and we can already tell that Morgan seems to be struggling to remain sane as he continues his work on the Talos 1 as the subject of experimentation.

The people or beings running the experiment have yet to be revealed, but we can assume that they’re nasty. We get a quick and dirty glimpse of some chaotic combat sequences where Morgan wields a wrench, shotgun, and some mysterious power to fight off an alien threat that has overrun the Talos 1. The source of Morgan’s power is also a mystery. In the previous Prey the hero discovered his ability to leave his body and “spirit walk.” That power came to him as a result of his spiritual heritage, but Morgan’s power seems to be much darker in origin. At the end of the reveal you can see Morgan speaking to himself in a mirror, and it seems that his mind has been completely unhinged by that point.

There’s still so much we don’t know about Prey , but it’s very safe to say that this is a complete re-imagining of the game. Arkane Studios has done wonderful things with the Dishonored games, so we trust them to tell a dark, gritty, and engaging story. I can’t wait to be challenged and frightened by Prey when it comes to PS4, Xbox One, and PC next year.
