E3 2006: Microsoft Press Conference

Tuesday May 9, 2006 - 11:20 AM - CCC is live at the E3 Microsoft Press Conference in Los Angeles, CA at the Graumann's Chinese Theater. We've shooed away the fat guy dressed as Spider-Man, in the 20 dollar costume. What a moron! These idiots make money at this! Stay tuned!
11:30 AM - Prompt is good. Cliffy B. starts the show with Gears Of War - a title that impressed us at least years X360 unveiling. The game looks amazing with tons of action happening on the screen at once. Action packed. Definitely a game that will delight FPS fans, brought to you by one of the best teams that makes 'em.

11:46 AM - Peter Moore on stage. Next year at this time there will be 6 million people on XBL. He then goes on to say that there will be new Live games in the form of:

  • Contra
  • Sonic
  • Frogger
  • Pac-Man
  • Time Pilot
  • Ultimate Mortal Kombat
  • Rootbeer Tapper

I guess this is what passes as news. The Moore says Lumines Live will also be coming and that Warner Bros will supply music videos behind the action. Madonna is shown in the example.

12:00 PM - A list of new titles are shown via video. They are:

Next-Gen games displayed included:

  • Gears of War
  • Superman
  • Lost Planet
  • Table Tennis
  • Mass Effect
  • NHL 2K7
  • F.E.A.R.
  • Too Human
  • Viva Pinata
  • Moto GP 06
  • Enchanted Arms
  • Battle for Middle Earth 2
  • Sonic The Hedgehog
  • Madden
  • World Series Poker
  • Saint's Row
  • Smackdown
  • Stanglehold
  • Test Drive Unlimited
  • NCAA Football
  • Dead Rising
  • DDR Universe
  • Crackdown
  • N3: Ninety Nine Nights

12:09 PM - Fable 2 and Forza 2 are announced. Forza 2 will support 12 people on XBL. The Xbox Live Camera is also unveiled. It will hook up to the X360 via the USB port. The program to operate it is called Xbox Live Vision.

The XBL Camera is a creamy white color with a sporty little green line.

12:11 PM - Sakaguchi-san is brought on stage to introduce footage of Blue Dragon which will be released in Japan at the end of the year, but nobody bothers to mention if it will come to the US. Strange that they would bother showing it then.
12:13 PM - Splinter Cell: Double Agent is shown and we're told it will be available in September of this year.
12:15 PM - Microsoft Games Studios shows off Viva Pinata. Pass. Sorry, but it looks dull.
12:20 PM - The Marketplace talk begins. This whole thing reminds me of being held captive in a time share condo sales blitz. The Marketplace really helps sell games we're told. EA increased their sales of Fight Night by 5 times. That's good, because EA was hurting financially. Kidding. Downloadable TV content is coming to XBL including a Gears Of War docudrama. Remember, like anything in this biz, it's just there to sell you more stuff, right? Don't lose sight of the big picture or you're a goner.
12:25 PM - The HD DVD player is shown and it's smaller than an X360 by quite a bit.
12:27 PM - Grand Theft Auto 4 will hit the X360 on October 16, 2007. They didn't mention that it was an exclusive, so that probably means that it certainly ain't.

12:29 PM - The conference takes on more of a PC gaming tone, with ties to X360 now as Vista and PC gaming take the stage. A flight sim is shown as well as the Conan game, Age of Conan. Unfortunately, it's based on Conan the Barbarian and not Conan O'brien as I was hoping. Playing as Triumph the Insult Comic Dog would have been awesome!

Windows Vista is mentioned as coming in January 2007. They just need more time to program all of the insecurities into it. That's my little joke. Alan Wake trailer is shown. Looks very cool. I want to play this game....someone please send me a demo.

12:34 PM - Bill Gates comes on stage and talks about Project Gotham Racing 3. "The future of gaming is based around software and a broad perspective," he says.

Gates introduces a new platform called Live Anywhere, which will be available when Vista ships. It will be a big part of the Vista OS. It will have cross platform capabilities and will be able to network with cellphones, the PC and Xbox 360. Live Anywhere is then demoed. Whenever you log onto the system, it will appear like XBL. You will use the same Gamertag and have access to your friends list etc. The XBL Marketplace will also be available on all systems.
