The Walking Dead Preview for Xbox 360

The Undead Phenomenon Comes To Consoles

With Season 2 of The Walking Dead coming to a close, fans are going to need something to keep The Walking Dead withdrawal from plaguing them. Thankfully, Telltale Games is taking the post-apocalyptic tale to the world of bits and bytes, and, like its TV sibling and most of Telltale’s previous work, The Walking Dead game will be brought to us episodically. In preparation for the game’s release next month, here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming game.

Telltale is known for their episodic games that tend to be driven by story over gameplay. This approach sounds like it could work perfectly with The Walking Dead, since it’s all about the story, characters, and world. The game will introduce a new cast of survivors, specifically a man named Lee Everett, around whom the story revolves. Lee’s trying to get to the Deep South, and along the way he’s going to meet some new faces, like a little girl named Clementine, and a few familiar ones, including Glenn, Lilly, and Hershel.

Lee is a character that was created exclusively for this video game—his back story, personality, motivations; everything has been tailored to make him an interesting character to play as. Lee will have some tough decisions to make, decisions that can affect his life or the lives of those who depend on him. There will also be a number of real-world puzzles, such as unlocking doors.

The decisions Lee makes can be as simple as how he sleeps or where he explores, or tougher choices that can change everything. An example of this could be a situation where Lee has two people in need of his help, but he can only save one of them. Some decisions will need to be made in a certain amount of time, forcing you to think and react quickly to a situation. This could mean your group is trapped in a building that’s being overrun by the undead, and you have little time to decide what to do, or any number of other possibilities. There will also be bigger decisions will even have repercussions in future episodes in the series. It’s obvious that making these decisions is going to be a very important aspect of this game.

Those who have played Telltale’s other titles are undoubtedly aware of your limited-to-nonexistent control of the characters you play. These games are mostly story-driven experiences brimming with puzzles, point-and-click-style gameplay, and contextual events. The Walking Dead will incorporate elements of Telltale’s previous work, but you’ll also have quite a bit more control of Lee. This isn’t a combat-heavy game; it’s more about solving the many problems that keep you and your group of survivors from reaching their goal.

The quick time events that made up a majority of Telltale’s last game, Jurassic Park, will be used much less often in The Walking Dead. You’ll have full control of Lee, so you can explore the world, fight to survive, and move around more freely. You’ll need to be quiet while exploring the world, because gunfire or other loud noises can attract any nearby undead.

In The Walking Dead ‘s timeline, Lee’s story takes place when the apocalypse was just beginning to unfold. Rick is still in a coma, so this puts the game during the beginning of the first season of the TV series. As far as influences, its developer is focusing more on the comic world, rather than the TV series. Fans of either will be able to enjoy the game, but anyone familiar with the comics will recognize some of the locations in the game, and the art style was even inspired by Charlie Adlard’s work on The Walking Dead comic books.

The Walking Dead has been planned as a series of five episodes, the first of which is set for a release next month, with the other four following soon after.

This is also Telltale’s first foray into the world of motion control gaming. The game works with the PlayStation Move and Wii Remote Plus, giving players very different ways to play across each platform.

This is clearly the best time for Telltale to bring gamers and fans of The Walking Dead series an adventure/horror game based on the incredibly popular brand. With the developer’s penchant for emotionally charged storytelling and excellent characters, this could be a fantastic fit. We’ll know for sure when the game releases across a plethora of platforms next month.
