Get to know the Fury!
July 30, 2007 – Player vs. Player has been a big factor of most MMORPGs. But there’s always been some other internal driving force behind any MMORPG’s central theme. But Fury, from deliciously unique publisher Gamecock, will be an almost exclusively Player vs. Player experience. Of course you may think that this feature will somewhat limit other parts of the game, but read on, dear friend, because there’s more to this game then the ferocious combat!
The game starts you off as one of The Chosen which is a fancy title for an ancient race of warriors who used to be “all that” and more back in the day. But the bad news is you’ve been reborn and you’ve forgotten your past. And the world is in total chaos. You must recover your memories so that you can unlock the secrets of The Essence-which is a magical substance that holds the key to the world’s survival.
So as you can see, the story is there. But what about gameplay? Well, Fury has that covered too! You may see Player vs. Player and think total and complete carnage-fest, and to a certain extent you’d be right. But developer Auran has made sure that there’s more than one way to play.
First up is Elimination mode. This mode is a standard 4 vs. 4 deathmatch. One team survives, and one faces the anguish of defeat. In addition to just lunging at the enemy, players will be subject to a “best of three” tournament style to test their strategies and make decisions based on their enemies’ fighting styles. Then there’s Vortex mode, which is basically a glorified game of capture the flag. But of course, I never said capture the flag was easy. This mode will give even the most hardened strategist a forum to test their toughest tactic and see if it holds up. The next mode is Bloodbath, which is a winner-take all match with up to 32 players. But the most extreme mode has to be Fortress mode. This mode entails a massive 32 vs. 32 battle royale that is sure to titillate even the most hardcore PC gamers.
Aside from the different modes of play, there’s still even more cause to be excited about Fury. Even though Player vs. Player combat is not exactly friendly to character or story development, Fury makes use of its extensive human interface and tailors it to the individual user. So even though you may not fight a traditional “boss fight” that you need to clear, you’ll still have to fight that human before you can unlock the next stage of whatever mode you’re working with. And as your character recovers his/her past, you’ll be able to evolve with them, unlocking new skills and abilities as you conquer your enemies.
Fury is surely going to be a real treat for PC gamers. It radically changes the notions of what is and is not beyond the boundaries of the MMORPG genre. And the exclusively Player vs. Player aspect just makes the “Massively Multiplayer” facet of MMORPGS that much bigger. So cheers to Fury for opening up the world of MMORPGs even more. I didn’t even know it was possible before, and I’m happy to see some real trailblazing done in the realm of PC gaming.
